Offsite or large Asset Presence Tracking with OnSight & MineW

In today’s fast-moving operational environments—whether aviation hangars, agricultural depots, or a construction site knowing where your assets were last seen isn’t just helpful. It’s essential.

That’s where Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) presence solutions come into play, offering a solution that does not require a cellular connection per asset, (no  monthly cellular fee per asset required), yet offers a simple effective way to track assets last seen location.

What Is BLE Presence and Last Seen Location?

BLE presence asset tracking uses small, battery-powered beacons attached to the asset (we use those from MineW) that emit / broadcasts out signals at regular intervals. The beacon signals are picked up by or gateways or gateway software on smartphones throughout a facility. When an asset equipped with a beacon enters a gateway receiving zone, its signal / presence is logged by the gateway that receives it, along with a timestamp and location.

OnSight’s BLE Ecosystem

OnSight integrates MineW’s BLE hardware into a broader software ecosystem designed for New Zealand businesses. Their platform supports:

  • Bluetooth ID cards and asset tags for personnel and equipment
  • Zonal tracking to define logical areas within a site e.g. despatch or warehouse 3
  • Real-time dashboards showing last-seen locations on a google style map interface
  • Compliance reporting for health, safety, and operational audits

This modular approach allows organisations to scale from a few tagged assets on site full-site coverage.

How It Works: Step-by-Step

  1. Tagged Assets - beacon / broadcast out their unique ID number
Each asset is fitted with a MineW BLE beacon—options include rugged tags for machinery or slim cards for tools and handhelds.
  2. Deployed Gateways - receive the beacons unique ID number and reports it to Onsight Cloud software
BLE gateways (also from MineW) are installed in strategic zones—entryways, storage areas, workstations. These act as listeners.
  3. Signal Detection, Onsight Cloud software records the Beacon unique ID number was rseen by Gateway and when. When a tagged asset enters a zone typically with 150m of a gateway, the gateway detects its signal and sends data to OnSight’s cloud platform. Reporting that Asset 987 was seen by the Warehouse Gateway and therefore is in the warehouse.
  4. Location Logging
The system logs the asset’s ID, timestamp, and zone it was present in. If the asset moves, the last-seen location updates accordingly.
  5. Dashboard & Alerts
Users can view asset locations, generate reports, or set alerts for unauthorized movement or inactivity.

Real-World Use Cases

  • Aviation Logistics: Track ground support equipment across hangars and tarmacs.
  • Agricultural Operations: Monitor tools, vehicles, and harvest bins across orchards or packhouses.
  • Assets left at customer sites. Tools or machinery , (Dehumidifiers and fans) that are left on site will show last seen location and will be detected again whenever staff member with a smartphone senses it.
  • Workplace Safety: Displays which staff are onsite and in case of emergency where they are onsite. Onsight includes a staff check list for Fire Drills assembly points.

Why BLE Beacons Over RFID Tags?

Feature

BLE (MineW)

RFID (UHF)

Range

Up to 100m (configurable)

Typically 3–15m

Power Source

Battery-powered (active)

Passive (no battery)

Location Tracking

Yes - via Smartphone App

By RFID readers location only

Mobile Integration

Easy via smartphone App

Bluetooth pairing to smartphone

Cost

Higher beacon costs

Lower Gateway / Reader costs

Lower tag cost,

higher Reader costs

BLE excels in dynamic environments where location updates are automatic and smartphone mobiles are common.
